Children’s day in India is celebrated on 14th November every year as a tribute to India’s first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who is fondly known as “Chacha Nehru”. He made lots of effort to make a better education system for children.

Jawaharlal Nehru was born on November 14, 1889, and he played an active role in India’s movement for Independence.

Jawaharlal Nehru was the son of Shri Motilal Nehru who was a lawyer and nationalist statesman.

Jawaharlal Nehru graduated from Trinity College Cambridge and was trained to be a barrister in Inner Temple. He enrolled in Allahabad High Court for legal practice but due to his interest in India’s Independence Movement and politics, his legal practice was set aside. He became a prominent leader in Indian National Congress and Gandhi Ji was his mentor. As a congress president, in the year 1929, he demanded complete independence from British Rule.
Jawaharlal Nehru’s longest jailed term, out of, the 9 times he was jailed was of 1,040 days in Ahmadnagar Fort Prison after Quit India Movement when he wrote the book - THE DISCOVERY OF INDIA. Nehru has authored books such as The Discovery of India, Glimpses of World History, as well as his autobiography, Towards Freedom. A collection of his letters to his daughter when she was 10 years old and away at boarding school has been compiled and published as the book Letters from a Father to a Daughter.
Nehru's policy of neutrality paved the way for the establishment of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM)The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is an international organization (a group of countries) who do not want to be officially aligned (friends) with or against any major power bloc (group of countries). In 2018, the movement had 125 members and 25 observer countries. The group was started in Belgrade in 1961
On 15 August 1947, Nehru became the first prime minister of independent India. He held the post until his death in 1964. He implemented moderate socialist economic reforms and committed India to a policy of industrialization.
Nehru was very fond of children and was often referred to as Chacha Nehru. He advocated children to have a fulfilled childhood and receive high education. His great love for roses as well as children is a well-known fact. In fact, he often compared the two, saying that children were like the buds in a garden.
It was after Jawaharlal Nehru’s death in 1964 that a decision was made to observe Children’s Day or Bal Diwas in India on his birthday. Jawaharlal Nehru was immensely fond of children, and marking his birthday to celebrate kids also helped to stress on the importance of care, education, and rights of children everywhere in India.
Some of the most eminent institutes in our country, including the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), were established under his leadership. He also made several reforms and changes to existing laws to eradicate social injustices, and maintain harmony and peace among India’s diverse communities.
