Is it globalization of the economy, responsible for the
emphasis on correctness of grammar more than education?
Globalization is just a term, globe, invasions, business
interactions and collaborations had been happening for centuries. Main focus
was on trade not on corporate fraudulence ; as long as mainstream business is
concerned "English" is never given much importance in countries like
Russia, China, Japan and even in Europe where teachers are struggling to make students
speak English without using colloquialisms, slangs, spanish and latin mother
tongue influence.
Being Indian as a ruled class during colonial area and
accepting Britishers to be SAHAEB - played a game with the subconscious level
understanding or may have cause genetic mutation in which people think that
practicing to speak like British and American is something prestigious and a
style tag and someone who didn't bother to get "VOICE & ACCENT
TRAINING" by BPO Man Power Suppliers or Ex- BPOites becoming teachers
later after 5 to 6 years of night shifts getting to enjoy the appreciation of
being a great speaker among teachers and students in schools.
Since I have my deep links in Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata -
I have been observing the impact of BPO's expectation to speak correct English
, Neutral Accent ( a few accentuated Brit accent in choppy phrases sometimes
like - TRYNNA, WANNA), is being considered great to be heard from those who
were taught by Indian English Teachers but Trained to be a speaker who can
modulate their voice and accent needfully.
The reality of the story is not the need of flawless English
as such but a mechanism to do MASS HIRING to get an ITes Project in BPO and
later MASS BENCHING AND SACKING when the project is taken off and given to
another mushrooming BPO (Call Centre).
This is nearly a 15 to 20 year old story which was initially
not known to many but with advent of time, all have understood, the moment a
self proclaimed expert finds error in others and using the term - MTI = MOTHER
TONGUE INFLUENCE, SYLLABLE STRESS, INTONATION, VIBRANT VOICE.........
Educationists are easily able to make out - "YE CALL CENTER SE BHAAG KE
AAYA HAI TYPES" .
REAL EDUCATION IS NOT CORRECT ENGLISH BUT CORRECT USAGE OF
KNOWLEDGE IN SAVING MANKIND AND NATURE.
